2. Outcome Expectations

  • Studies show that negative outcome expectations of stopping drinking or using are linked to increased rates of continued use and use
  • A negative outcome expectation:
  • You believe that stopping using or drinking will have undesirable results such as feeling physically ill, tremors, anxiety or depression
  • You believe that stopping using or drinking will have undesirable results such as being lonely, losing friends or being ridiculed
  • If an individual believes that stopping use will end their friendships and that withdrawal will be a very unpleasant experience, they are likely to return to using or continue using
