Alcohol Negatively Affects Sleep
- Alcohol taken near bedtime:
- Initially shortens the time required to fall asleep
- Results in short periods of light sleep interrupted by periods of wakefulness
- Return to sleep is difficult
- The negative effects of sleep deprivation occur when alcohol use continues day after day
- The person who abuses alcohol becomes continuously sleep deprived
