Siblings Approach Conflict Differently

  • Parent-child conflict is a big source of rebellious child behavior toward both mom and dad
  • First borns identify with parents and authority and are more likely to defend the status quo
  • Later borns are more likely to identify with the underdog and to challenge the established order
  • The effect of birth order is greater then gender, social class, race, and nationality
  • Exceptions exist for every generalization
  • Given the right circumstances even the first born will reject the status quo
