Does Mental Functioning Return Once Damaged?

  • Chronic heavy drinkers who quit drinking recover these functions partially during the first 2 or 3 months after their last drink
  • Once this time passes it appears they have recovered as much as they will
  • Some deficits do appear to persist permanently
  • The more you increase your coping, thinking, and communication skills the better you will be able to manage and offset any permanent damage
  • The sooner you stop drinking permanently the better your outcomes will be
