  • Builds gradually
  • Noticed with physical signs like growling stomach
  • Occurs several hours after a meal
  • Goes away after eating
  • Eating leads to a sense of satisfaction
  • Emotional hunger
  • Develops suddenly
  • Includes thoughts of specific food like ice cream
  • Unrelated to time
  • Persists despite sense of fullness from eating
  • Eating leads to guilt or shame
