Circadian Rhythm:

  • Is the daily cycle of sleep and wakefulness
  • From the Latin circa diem meaning “about a day”
  • Refers to the fact that body rhythm works on a 24 hr pattern
  • Circadian rhythms:
  • Regulate body functions including digestion, elimination, and sleep
  • Are triggered by nerves and chemical messengers
  • Are controlled by the hypothalamus in the brain
