When Families Learn Of The Addiction Diagnosis

  • They may:
  • Experience shock, fear, sadness, guilt, anxiety, confusion, compassion, understanding, and even anger
  • Be relieved to finally learn a reason for the changes they see in their family member
  • Hope the diagnosis is wrong or that there has been a mistake
  • Experience anger and resentment if they feel powerless to change their family member’s situation
