Alcohol’s Effects On Mental Functioning
- Five areas of mental ability are consistently
damaged by chronic alcohol abuse:
- Memory formation: reduces the ability
to form new memories
- Abstract thinking: reduces the ability to think in ways not directly tied to concrete things such as size, color, and shape
- Problem solving: causes people to get stuck in a particular mode of problem solving and to take a lot longer to get a solution. They are unable to switch strategies
