Addiction Can Be A Response To Life Problems

  • Negative life events such as grief and loss can be a trigger to use
  • Any major negative life event can stimulate the use of drugs or alcohol as a means to cope with the event, such as a sudden death
  • Continued use after the event leads to increased depression, anxiety, and anger
  • Drug or alcohol abuse can continue until the person comes to terms with the loss and develops effective coping skills to manage the “normal” and the unexpected losses that occur in life
