When Do People Change?

  • Humiliation, shame, guilt and anxiety are not the primary causes of change
  • Guilt, shame, and anxiety can actually have the reverse effect causing the person to feel that change is impossible and undeserved
  • Constructive behavior change seems to happen when the person connects it with something of intrinsic value, something important, something cherished
  • Finding powerful reasons to change happens when you find what truly matters to you
