The Risks Associated With Physical Activity

  • The most common health problems associated with physical activity are musculoskeletal injuries (strains, sprains), which can occur with:
  • Excessive amounts of activity
  • Suddenly beginning an activity for which the body is not conditioned
  • Serious health problems like heart attack are rare, occurring mostly among sedentary people with advanced arterial disease (plaques in blood vessels) who do unaccustomed strenuous activity
  • Sedentary people, especially those with preexisting health conditions, should gradually build up to their desired level of physical activity
