5. Emotional States

  • Negative emotional states affect our thinking and behavior, and therefore outcomes
  • The most common negative emotional states that affect outcome are anger, depression, and anxiety:
  • Example of anger affecting outcome:
  • An angry person has poorer recall of a disagreement than a calm person
  • In this situation anger is an internal determinant of memory
  • Anger affects the outcome, how well you remember details of events that happen while you are angry
